Martin Phillipson began his Trumpet studies attending the Sydney Conservatorium High School under the tutelage of Lew Campbell. He then went to study undergraduate and postgraduate studies under Daniel Mendelow and Gordon Webb during his Bachelor and Masters Degree studies.
During this time he worked regularly with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet, Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Brass Ensemble with Paul Goodchild and formed the Australian Brass Quintet with Dan Williams in 1994.
After touring with the Sydney Symphony to Europe in 1995, Martin moved to Germany where he studied under Max Sommerhalder at the Detmold Hochschule für Musik, and after graduating went on to be an assistant teacher there. During this time he was a member of the Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra Herford, and performed with South West Radio Baden Baden, Deutsche Symphony Orchestra Berlin, and the German Bach Soloists; and several solo concertos with Orchestras in Münster and Herford.
After this time in Germany, Martin held two Principal Trumpet positions in Asia, firstly with the Malaysian Philharmonic and then the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, culminating in a European Tour with this orchestra in 2000
In 2001 Martin took up the position of Associate Principal Trumpet with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and has since also performed as Principal with the Queensland, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras.
In 2011 Martin was invited to play in the inaugural concerts for the Australian World Orchestra, a festival Orchestra with invited Australian musicians to perform at the Sydney Opera House with conductors Alex Brieger and Simone Young. The Australian World Orchestra reformed again in 2013, with Zubin Mehta conducting, and recently toured Singapore in 2016.
Martin also enjoys performing on the natural baroque trumpet, and has been a founding member of Australian Baroque Brass (with several recently released recordings) and has performed with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, and also with Adelaide Baroque.
