PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY
Matthew Tomkins is currently Principal Second Violin of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 2010, having been a member of the MSO since 2000.

Matthew is well known to Australian audiences as a founding member of the Flinders Quartet where he performed until 2012. Formed in 2000, it is renowned as one of Australia’s premier chamber music ensembles. The quartet performed at festivals including the Melbourne International, Bangalow, Port Fairy, Castlemaine, Tyalgum, Ballarat Goldfields, Camden Haven, Macedon and Woodend festivals and made numerous live recordings and broadcasts for ABC Classic FM and 3MBS FM. They also performed in Canada, Switzerland, Sweden and the UK.

Matthew has been a member of the Australian World Orchestra in 2017 & 2019 and is a regular performer in the MSO Chamber Players series.

Matthew has tutored regularly for the Australian Youth Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra and has taught at The University of Melbourne and Victorian College of the Arts.
